Probe.

You SSH in, run uptime, and the load average is sitting at 12 on a 4-core box. Alarming - except when you run top, the CPU columns show 90% idle. Nothing is actually computing anything. That combination confuses a lot of people, because everyone's trained to treat load average as a CPU metric. It isn't, and chasing CPU culprits here wastes your time while the real bottleneck - your disk - keeps choking every process that tries to read or write.

Symptom: Load Average Is Up, but Nothing Is Using CPU

The tell-tale signs:

  • uptime shows a load average well above your core count, sustained for minutes or hours.
  • top or htop shows CPU usage mostly idle (id column high), sometimes with a suspicious percentage sitting in wa (I/O wait).
  • The site feels sluggish, SSH commands pause before returning, and simple things lik
