What AzuraCast is

AzuraCast is a self-hosted web radio platform. It bundles the pieces a station needs — media library, playlist scheduling, an Icecast or SHOUTcast broadcast server, live DJ handover, listener statistics and a public player — behind one web interface.

Radio has a usefully predictable resource profile. Audio bitrates are an order of magnitude below video, so a station streaming at 128 kbps to two hundred listeners uses about 26 Mbps: significant, but nothing like a video stream. Storage is driven by the music library rather than by listeners.

What does take CPU is running several stations from one installation, each with its own encoders and possibly several bitrates. One station is light. Six stations at three bitrates each is a real workload.

Why run AzuraCast on a VPS

Bandwidth for continuous streaming, which runs 24 hours a day rather than in bursts.

Disk for the music library, priced as storage.

Root access for Icecast and encoder configuration.

Indian regions for Indian listeners, which reduces buffering on weaker connections.

How deployment works

AzuraCast is installed with its web interface, database and broadcast server, behind TLS on your own domain. Streaming ports are opened for listeners. Bandwidth is continuous rather than bursty — a station broadcasts all day — so plan transfer against 24-hour operation rather than peak-hour figures.

It is your server. AzuraCast is installed directly on your VPS or VDS, not inside a container we manage. You get root over SSH, you can install anything alongside it, change its configuration, or remove it entirely. We do not hold a key to it.
