What Akaunting is
Akaunting is open-source accounting software built on Laravel. It covers invoicing, expense tracking, bank reconciliation, customer and vendor records, and financial reporting, with a modular design that adds capability through apps.
The reason to self-host accounting is specific: financial records are among the most sensitive data a business holds, and they are also the data most subject to jurisdictional rules about where they may be stored. A server in a chosen region settles that question directly.
The workload is modest. It is a Laravel application with a MySQL database, and accounting is not high-traffic — a handful of users entering transactions is undemanding. What matters far more than performance is backup discipline, because losing accounting data is a category of problem that server specifications cannot help with.

How deployment works
Akaunting is installed as a Laravel application with PHP-FPM, MariaDB and a web server, behind TLS. The scheduler runs on system cron for recurring invoices and reminders. Set up automated database backups to somewhere other than this server on day one — for accounting data, backup discipline matters more than any specification on this page.
