What Peppermint is
Peppermint is an open-source ticket management and helpdesk system. It covers the core of support work — tickets, clients, assignment, notes and email notifications — without the weight of enterprise service desk software.
The argument for self-hosting a helpdesk is mostly about pricing shape. Commercial helpdesks charge per agent per month, which makes adding an occasional contributor a budget decision rather than a practical one. Self-hosted, the agent count is a number in a database.
It is a younger project than most things on this page, which cuts both ways: development is active and the interface is modern, but the feature set is narrower than long-established alternatives and the release cadence means keeping current matters. Evaluate it against what your support process actually needs before committing.

How deployment works
Peppermint is deployed with its database and Node runtime behind NGINX with TLS. Outbound email needs an SMTP relay with SPF and DKIM configured, or ticket notifications will not reach customers reliably. Because the project moves quickly, plan to keep it updated rather than installing once and forgetting it.
What people run it for
Small support teams
Ticketing without per-agent subscriptions.
Internal IT helpdesk
Staff requests tracked on infrastructure you own.
Client support
Per-client ticket history on your own domain.
Replacing shared mailboxes
Assignment and status instead of an inbox nobody owns.
